Between 1973 and 1990, thousands of Mapuche, Aymara and Diaguita children were taken from their families and sent abroad through irregular adoptions to European countries such as France, Switzerland, the Netherlands and Italy, among others.
This crime was part of a broader network and policy of uprooting carried out by the military junta that took power after the coup in Chile. Public hospitals, civil servants, international organizations, adoption networks and the Church all played a role, leading to the cultural uprooting of thousands of children whose inherent right to identity was violated.
Today, more than thirty years after the return to democracy, the many forms of colonial violence exercised against First Nations continue to leave open wounds. Deep fractures run through both the personal and collective memory of thousands of people who, in their search for truth, begin the journey back to their territories of origin. There, among silenced languages and forgotten names, they try to piece their stories back together, reclaim a sense of belonging, and come back into existence.
The project is funded by Chile’s Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage, and co-produced by Punctuate! Theatre and Pemmican Collective Playwrights’ Cohort – Canada, Festival Sens Interdits – France, Fundación Teatro a Mil, the Intercultural and Indigenous Studies Center CIIR, Viodemos, and supported by the Chilean-French Institute and the PAOCC Supporting Collaborating Organizations Program.
