Ayacucho comes from two Quechua words: “Aya,” meaning death, and “Kuchu,” meaning corner.
Throughout the play, Ricardo — an actor and danzante de tijeras from Ayacucho — delves into his personal history and how it has been marked by the cycles of violence that have shaped his land: the founding myth, the battle for independence, the massacre for free education, the internal armed conflict, and the most recent killing of civilians in December 2022.
It seems that every so often, a certain quota of deaths must be met — as if to give meaning to the name itself. But is that really true? Is it possible to break the cycles that seem to doom an entire people? And what can an actor say when his own family history holds both victims and perpetrators?
