Alexander Ekman

Director

A key figure in contemporary ballet

This Swedish choreographer and theater director (1984) is one of the most important names in dance internationally. He has created pieces for more than 40 companies worldwide, including the Royal Swedish Ballet, the Norwegian National Ballet, the Boston Ballet, the Royal Ballet in Flanders, the Sydney Dance Company, the Royal Ballet in Denmark, the Vienna Ballet and the City of Sao Paolo Ballet. His play, Cacti (2010), was a worldwide success and has been performed by more than 15 dance companies. He has also created his own versions of Swan Lake and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. As well as ballet, he has worked on movies and pop music with artists like Alicia Keys.

-Director Alexander Ekman is known as avant-garde in Europe for having redefined ballet, giving it a new meaning and esthetic and drawing in new generations of audiences. Each of his performances takes a gamble by using moving and unique scenes and images, like in his version of Swan Lake (2014), where he quite literally made the dancers swim and splash around on stage.

-It is a play that expands the limits and possibilities of classical ballet, becoming a kind of comedy that has been unanimously acclaimed by critics, particularly the performance of the Escapist, dancer Oscar Salomonsson. It is definitely one of the unmissable pieces of Santiago a Mil 2022. “Eskapist is a funny and sensitive portrait of anyone who ever dreamt of a more exotic life. As the camera hovers a hair’s breadth from his soul, Salomonsson proves what an exceptional artist he is, someone who can make the ordinary into great art”, says David Mead of SeeingDance.

An extraordinary ballet-comedy that uses dreams to help us escape reality.

Are you an escapist? When do you like to escape?

Sometimes we want to get away from it all by daydreaming, listening to music, watching a movie or just by creating an imaginary world in our head. When we go to the theater, for example, we enter a world that we could not have dreamed up ourselves.

For this new play, renowned Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman take us on a ‘journey through the looking glass’ beyond our own reality. The Escapist is a man who is bored by the tedium of his everyday life and who escapes into other hilarious realities using his imagination. Known for his spectacular pieces and for the images he brings to the stage, Ekman invites us to travel through a series of surreal situations, thanks to the incredible technical skills and versatility of the dancers from the Royal Swedish Ballet. Eskapist is a piece that shows us that the stage is truly a magical place, where the world - as we know it – shifts and changes, only to eventually dissolve into the most expressive type of fantasy imaginable.
